The Connecticut Childbirth & Women's Center opened its doors on August 4, 1997. We are fully licensed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health to provide birthing facilities outside an acute care hospital--the only such freestanding birth center in the state. The center is staffed by a group of three certified nurse-midwives and five to seven registered nurses who provide routine prenatal and birthing care to low-risk moms. Three board-certified obstetrician-gynecologists are available to provide consultative services. At the Connecticut Childbirth & Women's Center, labor and birth are treated as normal events in a woman's life.
The childbearing experience is one of health for the overwhelming majority of families. Comprehensive maternity care, therefore, is basically preventive and not curative health care. Childbearing families are entitled to maternity care which is safe, satisfying and economical. Each family is also entitled to participate as a member of the team deciding on the care which is appropriate to its individual needs.
Providing for the welfare of women and their newborns is the very reason for our existence. We shall assist women in experiencing the wonder and joy of childbirth in safe, comfortable, sensitive surroundings.
